About Australians for Syria SA
Our Story
Australians for Syria SA (AFSSA) was established in 2013 by members of the Syrian-Australian community in Adelaide, South Australia, in response to the need for a united community voice and a support network for Syrian families settling in the state.
Since then, AFSSA has grown into a trusted community organisation that brings people together through cultural events, social gatherings and community programs, while also supporting newly arrived families as they settle into life in Adelaide.
AFSSA also plays an active role in raising awareness of the situation in Syria and organising humanitarian fundraising efforts, connecting the South Australian community with the ongoing needs of people affected by the crisis.
Each year, AFSSA brings the community together to mark Syrian Liberation Day, and has represented South Australia's Syrian community on a delegation visit to Syria, including meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in Damascus.

Head of Community
Dr Assem Al Alwani
Head of Community, Australians for Syria SA
General Practitioner with many years of experience in Family Medicine, with a strong background in surgery and emergency medicine, and a special interest in chronic illness prevention.
