About Dr Assem Al-Alwani
Dr Assem Al-Alwani is a Syrian-Australian medical practitioner and community leader who has been actively involved in supporting the Syrian community in South Australia and advocating for the aspirations and wellbeing of Syrians both in Australia and abroad.
Dr Al-Alwani completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery in Syria before continuing his medical career in Australia. His Australian qualifications include a Diploma of Public Health and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP).
His medical career in Australia has spanned both hospital and general practice medicine. He worked in Emergency Medicine for approximately 10 years, including as a Senior Medical Officer in Emergency Medicine, before continuing his career as an experienced General Practitioner in Adelaide.
As Chairperson of Australians for Syria SA, Dr Al-Alwani has played an active role in bringing together the Syrian-Australian community, promoting awareness of Syria and its people, and supporting humanitarian and community initiatives.
Throughout the years of the Syrian Revolution against the Assad regime, he has been a strong advocate for the Syrian people and their aspirations for freedom, dignity and justice. He has also worked to strengthen connections between the Syrian community and the wider Australian community.
Following the liberation of Syria in December 2024, Dr Al-Alwani remains committed to supporting a peaceful, united and prosperous future for Syria, while continuing to strengthen the contribution and voice of Syrians within Australian society.
